December giveaway: vscode plugin to help with entity encoding

Wolfgang Meier
Dear list,

we are happy to announce the e-editiones December giveaway series. We're not going to tell you everything upfront, but regardless if you have been nice or naughty, there will be something to look forward to every week.

First in line is a Visual Studio Code plugin, allowing you to:

* edit your TEI files (duh!) and get an instant preview using any ODD with TEI processing models
* select and look up entities in a variety of authority databases (GND, geonames, ...) and insert the correct markup with a click

Full story on https://e-editiones.org/vscode/

Cheers,

the e-editiones elf team

Dear list,

if you'd like to join the December Open Source Advent party all the elves would be grateful for help with translating new labels for Publisher 7 via https://crowdin.com/project/tei-publisher

Bulgarian, Dutch, Greek, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovenian, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian need only little bit of love and care to get back to 100%. On this occasion we'd like to thank Maria Niku for Finnish translation which brought our count up to 20 languages covered!

Cheers,

the e-editiones elf team

Re: December giveaway: vscode plugin to help with entity encoding

Magdalena Turska
Dear list,

next up in our Open Source Advent is the TEI Publisher 7 release from last Friday. The second release coordinated by e-editiones, it is the shiny example of a cooperative development model in which users, researchers, institutions and developers work hand in hand towards a shared goal. Detailed information can be found in this blog post and in the documentation.

Today's highlight is the new FAQ service. The site is automatically generated from GitHub repository, so we can all easily add or update the content thanks to GitHub’s quick edits. We are looking forward to the community feedback on new Publisher and would welcome all contributions on the FAQ!

Stay tuned for more news from the busy elf team...

Re: December giveaway: vscode plugin to help with entity encoding

Magdalena Turska
Dear list,

with a growing number of editions realised with the TEI Publisher it is a logical next step to wish for a search service which can run queries across multiple heterogeneous corpora at the same time.

The cross-search prototype is exactly such a search engine. Only requirement for the editions themselves is that they expose the api/search/document API endpoint, which is a matter of simple customization for all TEI Publisher 7 applications which support Open API specifications out of the box.

We are very happy to report that our prototype works really well as a proof of concept with the eclectic collection of documents from TEI Publisher demo apps, all originating with vastly different projects with diverse encoding styles. Next, we intend to extend this idea into a general portal for archives and libraries and we would welcome collaboration from interested institutions.

Our sincere thanks go to the Bibliothek für Bildungsgeschichtliche Forschung des DIPF / Research Library for the History of Education at DIPF for supporting this project.

This is yet another "present" in e-editiones Open Source Advent calendar but we assure you, not the last.

Wishing everyone happy holidays,
your elf team
